# Disposable Cameras at Weddings: Cost, How Many, Worth It?

What disposable cameras really cost at a wedding, how many to buy for your guest count, how the flash copes in a dark room, and what to use instead.

A disposable camera on every table is one of those ideas everyone likes on sight: no screens, a little mystery, a stack of candid prints a few weeks later. Whether it pays off comes down to three numbers: what it costs, how many cameras you buy, and how many frames come out usable. Here they are, with sources. Prices were checked in **October 2026** and they move, so read them as a snapshot.

## Are disposable cameras worth it at a wedding?

As an extra, yes. As the only plan, rarely. That is where photographers, forum threads and sellers on both sides mostly land: the best frames are wonderful, the yield is lower than people expect, and the bill is higher.

**Choose them if** many guests are older and don’t live on their phones, you want prints on a table, and someone reliable will collect the cameras and pay a lab to develop and scan them.

**Skip them, or keep them as a bonus, if** you need dependable photos of every guest, most of the party is in a dark room, or nobody will own the collecting at the end of the night.

## What disposable cameras really cost at a wedding

- **The camera: about $16 to $27.** The Darkroom sells its own for $15.99. A wedding photographer priced the 2026 bulk packs at [$199 for ten Fujifilm cameras](https://thedrunkweddingphotographer.com/summerimperfect/disposable-cameras-for-weddings) (about $20 each) and $189 for seven Kodak (about $27 each). One seller’s guide lists [$8 to $15](https://scenedisposable.com/wedding-disposable-cameras).
- **Developing: $17 to $30 a roll.** [The Darkroom](https://thedarkroom.com/product/disposable-cameras/), a mail-in lab, starts at $17. A wedding photographer puts it at [$15 to $30](https://mark-davidson.com/blog-guide-to-disposable-cameras-for-weddings/). At Walgreens, a June 2024 report listed [$15.99 per 24 exposures](https://www.slashgear.com/1605095/where-to-get-disposable-camera-cost-to-develop) (check the current price).
- **Scans: sometimes extra.** Two vendor guides quote $3 to $10 a roll. Ask what the development price includes.

The arithmetic: **cameras = guests ÷ 10 (low) or ÷ 8 (high), rounded up, plus 2 for the bar and entrance**. Each camera costs **$33 to $57** all in (camera plus development and scan). Tax and shipping are not included.

Other published estimates for 100 guests: $345 to $600 (Scene, a camera seller) and $350 to $530 (Knipsmig). Ours reaches higher because its top assumes the $27 camera and a $30 lab.

**Shots per guest is the number nobody divides.** Ten cameras at 27 exposures is 270 frames for 100 guests, which is 2.7 each, and a table shares one camera.

**What a usable photo costs.** The only measured ratios we found are anecdotes. A Napa couple spent $150 on six cameras and got 17 usable photos out of 162 ([PetaPixel, July 2024](https://petapixel.com/2024/07/05/couple-spends-150-on-disposable-cameras-for-wedding-learn-hard-truth)): about $8.80 each. A [WeddingWire poster in 2011](https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/thinking-of-table-cameras/88a3d656645ed12a.html) paid $80 for cameras and $100 to develop them for about ten keepers: $18 each. Two stories are not a study, but plan for far fewer keepers than frames.

In the UK, Jessops listed the Kodak FunSaver (27 exposures) at £15.99 and £19.99 in two October 2026 checks; we couldn’t open the page to confirm which is current, and we found no 2026 UK lab prices.

## How many disposable cameras? The published rules differ by a factor of three

For 100 guests, the rules we found give four different answers:

Rule

Cameras for 100 guests

Who says it

1 per 4 guests

25

[easyweddings](https://www.easyweddings.com.au/articles/disposable-wedding-camera-tips/) (Australia, 2021)

1 per 8 to 10 guests, or one per table of 8 to 10

10 to 13

[Maplin](https://www.maplin.co.uk/blogs/expert-advice/are-disposable-cameras-at-weddings-a-good-idea) (UK retailer, 2025); The Knot, per its search snippet

1 per 10 to 15 guests

7 to 10

Mark Davidson, wedding photographer (updated September 2026); Scene’s FAQ

1 per table, plus 2 to 3 extras and 3 to 5 spares

15 to 20

Scene’s table

Scene’s own table and its own FAQ disagree by a factor of two, and that is the clue: none of these rules comes with measured data.

**Our pick: one per table, plus two.** A camera on a table is shared by 8 to 10 people, so 27 frames is about three each. Going to one per four guests doubles the bill: about 25 cameras for 100 guests, $825 to $1,425 at the per-camera range above.

**Count your cameras:**

1. Count tables, not guests: one camera per table of 8 to 10.
2. Add two for the bar and the entrance.
3. Spares are optional. Scene suggests 3 to 5, which adds $99 to $285.
4. Multiply by 27 and divide by your guests. Under three shots each, add cameras.

## Will the photos turn out? Flash, dark rooms and the ready light

A disposable camera has a fixed lens and fixed settings. It needs its flash for nearly any indoor or evening photo, and the flash doesn’t reach far.

Sources disagree on how far. Kodak’s copy, quoted by [GuestCam](https://guestcam.co/blog/disposable-wedding-cameras-vs-modern-alternatives), says 4 to 11.5 feet (1.2 to 3.5 m). Jessops lists 1 to 3 m (3 to 10 feet). Several guides say about 10 feet (3 m), and one how-to guide gives 8 to 36 feet. We haven’t measured it ourselves, so plan on a person about 10 feet away at best, with a dark background behind them.

What goes wrong in practice:

- **The flash is off.** Newer models have an on/off switch. [The Drunk Wedding Photographer](https://thedrunkweddingphotographer.com/summerimperfect/disposable-cameras-for-weddings) suggests taping it on after dark, because guests, especially tipsy ones, forget. Commenters on the Napa couple’s story blamed flash left off.
- **The flash isn’t ready.** Some cameras take 5 to 10 seconds to recharge. Wait for the ready light.
- **The film is slow.** The Fujifilm QuickSnap Flash is ISO 400 and the Kodak FunSaver ISO 800.
- **Speeches and ceremonies.** Davidson says to skip the flash for distant moments, and a wedding photography guide says to turn it off during an indoor ceremony.

**An instructions card for each table** is cheap to print: *Flash on. Stay close. Don’t cover the lens. Twenty-seven shots for the whole night, save some for the dance floor.* To give guests something to aim at, add a few [wedding photo challenge ideas](https://film36.app/en/blog/wedding-photo-challenge/) on the back.

**Skip wedding-branded cameras.** The same photographer warns they often carry expired or respooled film, weak flash batteries, and sometimes fewer than 27 frames.

## Pros and cons of disposable cameras at a wedding

What goes right

What goes wrong

Candids the photographer never sees

Dark or blurry frames, with floors and tables in the mix

Guests without phones can take part

A low yield: 17 usable of 162 in one story, about 10 keepers in another

Nothing to install or sign up for

Cameras get lost or leave in a handbag

Paper prints, and some suspense

A wait of 1 to 4 weeks

Easy to explain to any age

A real bill, plastic waste, and no backup if a roll fails

## Getting the cameras back and the film developed

**Name a collector**: one person, a tote bag, a set time, and a return basket by the exit. Number the cameras if you hand them to specific people. **Don’t let them become favors**: guests mistake them for gifts and take them home. Then pick a lab:

Development, digital scans and a return label are included

Across the guides we read, the wait from handing in the cameras to seeing photos runs **1 to 4 weeks**. **Can you get digital photos?** Yes: ask for scans when you order, and for the negatives back. The 2048 × 3072 scan is about 6 megapixels, which the lab rates for prints up to 12 × 18 inches.

## Digital disposable cameras: what you gain and what you lose

The charm of a disposable camera is its rules: a limited roll, no preview, a wait. [Film 36](https://film36.app/en/how-it-works/) is an iPhone app built on them: each guest gets a roll of up to 36 shots (you pick 12, 24 or 36), with no preview, and everything develops the next morning at 10 AM.

**What you gain:** every guest has a camera instead of nine people sharing one, nothing to collect or develop, and a wait of one night instead of a month.

**What you lose:**

-   there is no physical object;
-   you need an iPhone to host it, though guests can use the app or a browser;
-   photos are kept for 7 days on the free plan and 90 days on the paid one, so you have to save them;
- guests get their photos as shot, with no film look; that look applies only to the couple’s own pictures.

There is also a fair objection to any delayed reveal. WeddingSnap, a rival tool, argues that a 12 to 24 hour delay hurts thank-you cards and that older guests won’t come back the next day. If you want to see photos the same night, a delayed reveal isn’t for you.

## Disposable cameras at weddings: your questions

### How many photos does a disposable camera take?

Usually 27 exposures. Some models give 24, 36 or 39. Wedding-branded cameras sometimes give fewer.

### Where can I get disposable cameras developed?

At a drugstore photo counter or a mail-in lab. Ask what’s included: scans, prints or a CD.

### Do disposable cameras work in dark rooms?

Only with the flash on, and only at close range: about 10 feet (3 m) at best.

### How do I stop guests taking them home?

Name a collector, put a return basket by the exit, and don’t present the cameras as favors.
